EASTERN HEIGHTS is a residential suburb of Ipswich in the City of Ipswich, Queensland. Located approximately 2 km east of central Ipswich, the population at the 2016 census was 3,709 people.

According to the 2016 census, the most common ancestries in Eastern Heights were Australian, English, Irish, Scottish, and German.  The most common languages spoken at home other than English were Vietnamese, Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish, and Tagalog.  The suburb has a median age of 37 years, which is slightly lower than the national average of 38 years.

Eastern Heights is home to two primary schools -  Eastern Heights State School and Ipswich Central State School. Both schools cater for students from prep to year 6 and offer a range of academic, sporting, and cultural programs.  For secondary education, students can attend nearby schools such as Ipswich State High School, Bremer State High School, or St Edmund’s College or option is available to access train/bus to attend colleges such as West Moreton Anglican College located at Karrabin.

The rich and fascinating history of Eastern Heights dates to the early days of Ipswich. The suburb was originally part of the Limestone Hill estate, which was owned by George Thorn, a prominent politician and businessman in colonial Queensland.  Thorn built his mansion, Thornville, on the hill in 1858, and it became a landmark in the area. The mansion was later demolished in 1964, but some of its features, such as the gatehouse and the fountain, remain in the suburb. Eastern Heights also has several heritage listed sites, such as the Eastern Heights State School, the Ipswich Central State School, and the former Ipswich General Cemetery.

With the suburb’s proximity to the Ipswich CBD, there are many shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment options.  One of the main shopping destinations is the Riverlink Shopping Centre which houses over 150 stores.  The centre also has the Limelight Cinema Complex, a kids club and a JP (Justice of the Peace) service.  The suburb has a railway station on the Ipswich and Rosewood line which provides easy access to Ipswich and Brisbane.

Eastern Heights offers a range of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, especially for those who love nature and sports. The suburb has several parks and reserves, such as the Cameron Park, the Cribb Park, and the Tantivy Park, where people can enjoy walking, cycling, picnicking, or playing. The suburb also has a golf course, the Ipswich City Golf, which is open to the public and has a clubhouse, a pro shop, and a restaurant. Adventure and excitement also abound at the Willowbank Raceway, which hosts drag racing and other motorsport events.

Being closely located to the Ipswich CBD, visitors and residents can also enjoy other amenities including the many cafes, restaurants, pubs ad shops to enjoy. The Ipswich Art Gallery, the Ipswich Civic Centre, and the Ipswich Library are also located in the CBD, offering cultural and educational activities for all ages. For more leisure and fun, Eastern Heights is also near the Queens Park, which features a botanical garden, a zoo, a playground, and a cafe.  The park also hosts events such as the Ipswich Festival, the Jacaranda Festival, and the Christmas Wonderland.
